Built in the 1960s by the Newhall Land & Farming Co., Valencia is a master-planned community known for its neatly groomed housing developments. In its earliest days, it was a railroad thoroughfare and home ranches with onion fields. After obtaining the name "Valencia" the town shifted in purpose becoming the site of modern retail stores, including the area's first mall. California Institute of the Arts is located in Valencia, as well as the main campus of the College of the Canyons.
