The northernmost part of the Santa Clarita Valley, Castaic is an unincorporated community best known for its recreational area, Castaic Lake. Historically, the area was referred to by the Chumash as "Kashtiq" which means "eyes," and in the 19th century some maps called it "Castec." It was a Southern Pacific Railroad junction. on the line from Piru to Saugus, and much of the land was settled by ranchers. Today it is still a stop for travelers going over the Ridge Route on Interstate 5, but Castaic is also a growing community of families, with schools, churches, and destination shopping.
