On Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026, the Starbucks at 25289 The Old Road served its last drink. Seven weeks earlier, San Fernando Coffee Company held its grand opening on Pico Canyon Road. In between, Metro closed the eastbound Valencia Boulevard on-ramp to southbound I-5 around the clock and sent its detour down The Old Road.
Taken together, those three changes moved Stevenson Ranch's morning coffee onto two corridors. One is The Old Road near McBean Parkway, which sits right on this fall's construction detour. The other is Stevenson Ranch Plaza on Pico Canyon Road, which sits along the road to the trailheads.
The Old Road closure, and why it happened
KHTS reported that the Stevenson Ranch Starbucks on The Old Road closed for good that Saturday. It was one of 20 Los Angeles County stores on the company's closure list that day. The building was a Chuy's Mesquite Broiler restaurant until 2022. That means the café ran for only a few years in a former restaurant space.
The closure was part of a national cut, not a local one. KHTS described the closures as part of an effort to close 250 "underperforming" stores across North America, which is about 1% of the company's more than 18,000 locations there. KHTS quoted a letter to employees from Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams. He said the company was closing locations "where we do not believe we can consistently deliver the experience we want for customers and partners or where we don't see a path to acceptable financial performance."
The Los Angeles Times put 25289 The Old Road on its list of Southern California stores likely to close. As of mid-October, no local outlet has reported what will move into the building.
The other Starbucks on The Old Road is a different store, and the Times list names only 25289. The company's own careers site still identifies Store #05308, "The Old Rd & McBean," at 25720 The Old Road. Counting the café inside Vons, The Old Road had three places to get Starbucks before Sept. 26 and has two now.
The Pico Canyon side filled in first
San Fernando Coffee Company opened seven weeks before the Starbucks closed. SCVNews announced the grand opening for 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, at 24921 Pico Canyon Road. The Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting the same day and called it the company's newest location and its third in the Santa Clarita Valley. The shop is part of Stevenson Ranch Plaza, the center at 24909 Pico Canyon Road, which also has a Tous Les Jours bakery café.
Canyon Country residents may already know the brand. KHTS profiled the company in July 2024, when it opened its Canyon Country store. At that point it also had shops in Sylmar and San Fernando. KHTS described the business as family-owned and Hispanic-owned. That story featured two drinks: the Horchata Lover, and a vanilla cold brew topped with horchata cold foam. It also noted the company's focus on making items from scratch. Those details are two years old, so the current menu may have changed since then.
The company's online ordering page for the Stevenson Ranch store takes scheduled orders but doesn't post store hours. Before planning an early stop, check the hours with the shop directly.
The Pico Canyon side also comes with somewhere to go after coffee. Pico Canyon Park is farther up the same road at 25600 Pico Canyon Road. Its hours run 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Oct. 31. Starting Nov. 1, it closes at 6 p.m. under the county's winter schedule. The opening time stays at 6:30 a.m. year-round, so a morning coffee-and-park routine isn't affected by the change.
Where the morning stops are now
Here are the coffee and bakery stops still open in Stevenson Ranch, grouped by corridor:
| Stop | Address | Corridor | Hours, as listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starbucks, Store #05308 | 25720 The Old Road | The Old Road at McBean | Waze lists 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays, 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekends |
| Starbucks inside Vons | 25850 N. The Old Road | The Old Road | Vons store hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily; café hours not listed |
| San Fernando Coffee Company | 24921 Pico Canyon Road | Stevenson Ranch Plaza | Not posted online |
| Tous Les Jours | Stevenson Ranch Plaza | Pico Canyon Road | Confirm with the store |
| Stevenson Donuts & Bakery | 25814 Hemingway Avenue | Off the main corridors | Confirm with the store |
A few notes on the table. The hours for the McBean Starbucks come from a third-party map listing, not the company's store locator. The Vons store page lists both the in-store Starbucks café and a bakery department. Stevenson Donuts & Bakery was on The Signal's roundup of the valley's sweetest spots in early 2023. Hours from that long ago aren't reliable enough to list here.
Two of these five stops are on The Old Road, and the 25720 Starbucks has the earliest listed opening time in the neighborhood. That matters this fall because The Old Road is also the official detour route.
The detour that runs through the McBean corner
On Monday, Sept. 21, the City of Santa Clarita announced that the eastbound Valencia Boulevard on-ramp to southbound I-5 would close 24/7 starting Tuesday, Sept. 22. The work is part of Metro's I-5 North County Enhancements project. SCVNews published the notice, which listed the detour as The Old Road and Stevenson Ranch Parkway/McBean Parkway.
Metro's own closure notice gives the timeframe as "September 22, 2026 through October 2026" and names no specific reopening day. As of Oct. 12, no newer date has been published. Until the ramp reopens, southbound I-5 traffic from Valencia Boulevard is routed through the same corner as Store #05308, which the company names after The Old Road and McBean.
The construction also affects late-night drives. Metro's notices list these windows near Stevenson Ranch through fall 2026:
- The Old Road between Weldon Canyon Road and Calgrove Boulevard. Intermittent closures run 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights and 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Saturdays as needed.
- Rye Canyon Road between Avenue Stanford and The Old Road. Overnight closures run 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. as needed.
- Magic Mountain Parkway between The Old Road and Tourney Road. Intermittent closures are scheduled through winter 2026.
Metro's August 26 community meeting presentation mentioned two more disruptions. First, I-5 will fully close for one or two nights sometime between September 2026 and February 2027 so crews can install permanent signs. Second, I-5 lanes will be reduced for two to three nights near Calgrove and Weldon Canyon in November 2026 for joint-seal work. The presentation gave no exact dates for either. The same presentation put the current construction stage at April 2024 through December 2026 and the project's completion at March 2027. The Metro project page gives a more general estimate of spring 2027.
Most of these closures happen overnight, so they rarely overlap with a 6 a.m. coffee stop. The Valencia ramp closure is different. It runs all day, so detour traffic shares The Old Road with the McBean Starbucks and the Vons café during morning hours too. Pico Canyon Road is not part of the posted detour, and Stevenson Ranch Plaza has two coffee options of its own.
Watching the 25289 building
The former Chuy's and Starbucks building is the one open question on The Old Road. It has now held a restaurant and a coffee shop, and no new tenant has been announced. Whatever moves in next will determine whether that address stays a morning stop.
Changes like a closed café, a new shop opening, or months of detours affect how a neighborhood works day to day, and they can show up in how buyers see a home's location.
